RedLab Digital

I'm excited to unveil three special chalkboards I just wrapped up at RedLab Digital, a post-production shop that works with ad agencies and film & TV producers.

Above is the 2' x 6' kitchen menu chalkboard, and below are the large 5' x 7' chalkboards in two meeting rooms.

Thanks again to Breanne for this great opportunity, and to everyone at RedLab for making me feel at home.

Linotype: The Film

I'm so exciting about Ligatures' screening of the Linotype film, happening one week from today at Coach House Books. RSVP on the Ligatures blog.

Much thanks to Tanya Roberts and Paul Dotey for helping make this event poster come to life!

"Great characters, both wooden and human"

I was fortunate enough to see a private screening of the documentary Typeface on the weekend (with my dear friends Tanya and Anne). If you able find a screening in your city, or buy/rent a copy, I highly recommend it. Mandatory viewing for type lovers and small town folk.

On fear

"...There are all sorts of minorities, but a minority is only thought of as one when it constitutes some kind of threat to the majority. A real threat or an imagined one. And therein lies the fear. And, if the minority is somehow invisible...the fear is even greater. And this fear is the reason the minority is persecuted. So, there always is a cause. And the cause is fear. Minorities are just people. People... like us.
Letʼs just talk about fear. Fear, after all, is our real enemy. Fear is taking over our world. Fear is being used as a tool of manipulation in our society. Itʼs how politicians peddle policy and how Madison Avenue sells us things that we donʼt need. Think about it. Fear that weʼre going to be attacked, fear that there are communists lurking around every corner, fear that some little Caribbean country that doesnʼt believe in our way of life poses a threat to us. Fear that black culture may take over the world. Fear of Elvis Presleyʼs hips. Well, maybe that one is a real fear.
Fear that our bad breath might ruin our friendships.
Fear of growing old and being alone.
Fear that weʼre useless and that no one cares what we have to say..."
-from A Single Man, adapted from the novel by Christopher Isherwood and directed by Tom Ford

Please, check your local listings and see this documentary.

The object of my affection

From the director of Helvetica comes Objectified, a new film about manufactured objects and the people who design them. Some inspirational words from an interview with industrial designer Dieter Rams:
Good design is innovative.
Good design makes a product useful.
Good design is aesthetic.
Good design makes a product understandable.
Good design is unobtrusive.
Good design is honest.
Good design is long-lasting.
Good design is thorough down to the last detail.
Good design is environmentally friendly.
Good design is as little design as possible.

Well-deserved

Lance Black wins 2009 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for 'Milk':

'...When I was 13 years old, my beautiful mother and my father moved me from a conservative Mormon home in San Antonio, Texas to California and I heard the story of Harvey Milk. And it gave me hope. It gave me the hope to live my life, it gave me the hope to one day live my life openly as who I am and that maybe even I could fall in love and one day get married. I want to thank my mom who has always loved me for who I am, even when there was pressure not to. But most of all, if Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he’d want me to say to all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told that they are less than by their churches or by the government or by their families that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value and that no matter what anyone tells you, God does love you and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights, federally, across this great nation of ours. Thank you, thank you, and thank you God for giving us Harvey Milk...'

Sean Penn wins 2009 Academy Award for Best Actor for 'Milk':

'...For those who saw the signs of hatred as our cars drove in tonight, and, I think that it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren’s eyes if they continue that way of support. We’ve got to have equal rights for everyone...'
